BTECH DENTAL SUPPORTS DENTAL EDUCATION DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

One of the consequences of the Covid-19 Pandemic that affected our entire lives is the changes in the education systems. The dentistry education where practical trainings are intensively applied in addition to theoretical lessons was also significantly affected. In such case, the practical trainings with online courses were rather difficult to perform for both academicians and students while the theoretical lessons can be carried out more smoothly. This situation showed differences between several universities. Some departments have gone beyond the conventional methods; they thought it would be more appropriate to carry out practical trainings at home and made their preparations in this way.

Professors from endodontics departments decided that it would be more appropriate to work on demo teeth made of suitable materials instead of the ones pulled out from patients during this period for dentistry students. Afterward, they reached Btech Dental to produce these artificial teeth. The professors demanded these features in demo teeth: being anatomically similar to natural teeth, having channel structures and variations and having the channels colored.

Upon these requests, the Btech Dental team developed the idea to segment the teeth in a Computed Tomography (CT) image taken from the head and neck region and apply the necessary arrangements. With the samples taken from the CT image with a slice thickness of 0.5 mm in accordance with the idea, we made all the necessary modeling and arrangements through the Mimics Innovation Suite design program in cooperation with the application engineers from Btech Medical team.

We designed the first test batches using Formlabs Preform software and used Formlabs Clear resin as the material. According to the calculations, it is detected that a set of 10 teeth with different properties can be produced with 6.83 ml of resin in 1:30 hours, including the support structures. We have also observed the suitability of our trials for multiple production by placing 100 demo teeth of different sizes on a built table.

We carried out the productions with our 3D printer Formlabs Form 3.

We made post-production processes and then the channel painting in cooperation with Btech Production team. Having the red color in the root canals was very important since it mimics the pulp tissue. Although it was pretty difficult to achieve sufficient color saturation due to the fine structure of the root canals, we achieved the optimum appearance as a consequence of the special painting technique that we have developed.

Afterward, we have shared the test batches with the professors. Based on the feedbacks from the professors, we carried out some improvements on the teeth.

Assoc. Dr. Gülşah Uslu performed a root canal treatment on the samples and shared the X-ray image with us.

As a result of our entire studies, dentistry students will be able to open an entrance cavity and make canal filling by using our dental models which have similar length and features to the anatomy of real teeth. Moreover, the students will have chance to obtain X-ray images of their studies with the models. As Btech Dental, we are glad to contribute to the education of future dentists with this project.
